Lock structures

In Belgium, almost 160 million tonnes of goods are transported by waterways every year and the volume is constantly increasing. This traffic leads to mobility problems on waterways and long waiting times for boat owners at locks.

Therefore, SOFICO decided to modernise its facilities and install wide-gauge structures on the main lock complexes located on the Meuse between Namur and Liège.

Objective: bring into service new 225 X 25 metre locks that allow two convoys of 4,500 tonnes or 4 boats of 2,000 tonnes to pass through at the same time, i.e. the equivalent of 560 16-tonne trucks.
