Hydroelectric power plants

SOFICO manages several types of hydroelectric power plants. It licences out waterfalls on the waterway dams to install either fixed or removable power plants.

Currently, SOFICO is developing a programme to install removable hydroelectric power plants at 18 dams :

Haute-Meuse (9)

La Plante, Tailfer, Rivière, Hun, Houx, Dinant, Anseremme, Waulsort and Hastière

Basse Sambre (6)

Salzinnes, Auvelais, Roselies, Montignies-sur-Sambre, Marcinelle and Monceau-sur-Sambre

Ourthe (3)

Grosses-Battes, Fêchereux-Hony and Chanxhe

The power plants at Tailfer, Waulsort, Hastière, Hun, Houx, Marcinelle, Monceau-sur-Sambre, Grosses Battes, Anseremme and Chanxhe are now in operation. All these removable power plants could produce a total of 80,000 MWh per year, i.e. the same as the annual consumption of almost 23,000 households (based on a household’s annual consumption of 3,500 MWh), corresponding to nearly all the households in the town of Verviers.

SOFICO also has fixed hydroelectric power plants in Grands-Malades, Andenne, Ivoz-Ramet, Ampsin, Lixhe, Floriffoux, Mornimont and Monsin.

In 2022, the hydroelectric power plants collectively generated more than 205,000 MWh, equivalent to the average annual consumption which is close to 60,0000 households.
